This
rite is called The Divine Liturgy
by the Eastern Orthodox Churches, a Mass by the Roman Catholic Church,
and Holy Communion or The Lord's Supper by the Protestant Churches. They all accept the presence of God, and of
Christ, and of God's Holy Spirit at the rite.
Some like more and some like less ceremony, but only in their
views of the changing of the bread and wine into
the Body and Blood of Christ do they really differ.
When
portions of the rite are set to
music, that composition is also called a Mass..
The
pageantry and music of the full Communion Liturgy, with it’s
processionals, incense, and chants has a dramatic impact. We feel the presence of God! Belief is perhaps more feeling than logic.
Setting the rite to music adds to the intensity of
our feelings...and helps us to remember...in ways that are still
valid now that most Christians can read.
The diversity of these
songs ranges from
Orthodox to Charismatic, but all are based on the age-old Christian
Communion prayers and texts that are shared by all
Christians. Together they form a Cantata that can be performed whole,
in part, or with a Minister or Priest to serve Holy Communion…Follow the rules of the church you are in. We all want some form
of Christian unity. It is my hope that showing how much we have in
common, can be one of the cords that bind us together.
Listen to “Every
Tribe & Tongue” and call it what you will, but I warn
you, if you
listen to all eighteen songs at one sitting, while
reading the lyrics, you will most likely share some of the
feelings
that Christians have shared down
through the ages.
